Speaker Series 2016 Kickoff: Michael Stern '01 and Rebecca Goldstone
On Thursday, February 25th, Michael Stern '01 and Rebecca Goldstone will discuss how a Sheldon Traveling Fellowship led them to establish their own conservation nonprofit, the New Nature Foundation.
The Harvard Rocky Mountain Harvard University Club invites you to join us for our kickoff event for the 2016 Speaker Series. This event will be held over dinner at the Washington Park Grille, 1096 South Gaylord St. Presenting will be Michael Stern '01 and Rebecca Goldstone.
An introduction to Michael and the foundation:
"I'm Harvard College (Quincy House) class of '01; Richard Wrangham was
my advisor, and the reason that Becka (Goldstone) and I went to Uganda
for the first time in 2000 to conduct research on red colobus monkeys
(which we ultimately published, having figured out why they are the
favorite prey species of chimpanzees). After graduation, I was a
Sheldon Traveling Fellow, and this funded the creation of the Kibale
Forest Education Project, where Becka and I took students from 5
Ugandan primary schools on field trips into Kibale National Park (home
to chimpanzees, elephants and countless other endangered species).
That program evolved into a more utilitarian endeavor, the Kibale Fuel
Wood Project, which started in 2006 (and incorporating as a 501c3, New
Nature Foundation, in 2008). NNF empowers people around the boundary
of the national park to meet their fuel needs in sustainable ways
through grass roots campaigns and an extensive environmental education
curriculum (including traveling video shows and four village science
museums). In 2011 we started the Kibale Eco-Char Initiative, which
creates cooking fuel from waste products. In 2014, we partnered with
the Denver Zoo to replicate the efficient stove portion of our work in
Northern Vietnam. All three programs continue today -
www.newnaturefoundation.org for photos and more details. The talk will
detail the evolution of the programs and our future plans."
This $35 prix fixe dinner features three courses and four entree selections including vegetarian and gluten-free options. Please see the menu at the bottom of the page.
